Weighing 30–40 grams at birth, they reach anywhere from 1.4–2.5 kg when fully grown. RABBITS REACH SEXUAL MATURITY at about three to four months. They can conceive within 12 hours of giving birth and have a gestation period of only 28 to 30 days. It is easy to see where the expression ‘breeding like rabbits’ comes from. RABBITS WILL BREED ALL YEAR ROUND in ideal conditions. The main breeding season is from spring to early summer. Female rabbits are called 'does' and male rabbits 'bucks'. Baby rabbits are known as 'kittens'. They are born in specially prepared burrows lined with grass and fur plucked from the mother’s belly. IF RABBITS ARE OBSERVED DURING THE DAY a high population is indicated, as rabbits are nocturnal and spend most of their day underground, usually only venturing out at night to feed. Rabbits range approximately two to three hectares, but they will stray further in search of food. MOST WILD RABBITS LIVE approximately 18 months. They live in colonies or warrens with a social hierarchy, depositing urine and faeces in communal latrines or mounds. These warrens usually consist of a series of tunnels and burrows, interconnecting with several entrances. Rabbits are also capable of living above ground in rocky terrain or dense scrub. The main causes of mortality are predation by cats, stoats, weasels and hawks. |
